Slat Wall – One Room Challenge – Week 3

OMG!!! its already week 3 of One Room Challenge. This Year sponsored by Apartment Therapy. So I thought of fun way to bring in the DIY to the rental community too. This is going to be a tutorial post for the easy Renter friendly slat wall. I have installed this slat using 2 different methods. Now lets explore!!!

The color I chose for the wall is “Vey Navy” by Behr Paints. Its such a gorgeous color!! It completely transformed the look of the wall. And I didn’t stop there. I took it to another level by making that Roman Clay finish. Want to how I did all these.!!! Just keep Reading.

Roman Clay Finish

Materials Required

Process:

Mixing the paint and Joint Compound
  • Mix Paint and Joint Compound. I used 1:1 ratio as I didn’t want the color to soften much and I didn’t like the darker version of “Very Navy”. So I mixed it and let it sit for sometime to thicken.
  • Once it is thick enough to spread with putty knife. Spread the mixture on to the wall with putty knife. <Check pics for reference below>
  • I went for 2 coat and I just love the look of it.

Slat Installation

Materials Required

Process:

  1. Cut to size. (I am using it as vertical slat) So I cut from top of the wall to top of the baseboard.
  2. Apply 2 coats of Paint on Slats (1×2)
  3. Now If you are using nail gun, then nail gun the slats directly to the wall. (I used the slats in sideways as spacer between each slats)
  4. If you are using Command Strips then Separate and stick strips together and apply 4 strips to back of the slats. Let the glue settle for 1 hr. I walked on top of it for strong adhesion.
  5. After 1 hr., stick the other side of command strips to the wall.
  6. Now you have a beautiful accent wall with Roman clay finish and Vertical slats.

Cost Breakdown:

  • Slats – $56
  • Joint Compound – $11
  • Paint – $49
  • Command Strips – $20

In total this project costed me $136 such a budget friendly project and you could do soo many variations here. Your imagination is your limit.
